A Young Woman Making Waves in the South African Creative Industry

In a country where women are still underrepresented in the creative industry, Sibu Mabena is a shining example of what can be achieved with hard work and determination. The founder and Chief Creative Officer of Duma Collective, a creative agency that specializes in event production, sponsorship acquisition, performance direction, and street and social media marketing, Mabena is a force to be reckoned with.

Mabena’s journey to success began in her early teens, when she joined an afterschool dance program. She quickly fell in love with the performing arts and went on to compete with the South African Dance Team abroad. Though Mabena hold a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Affairs (political science and international studies), her passion for the creative arts never wavered.



In 2014, Mabena founded Duma Collective with the goal of creating a platform for African creativity to flourish. Since then, the agency has worked with a wide range of clients, including Coca-Cola, Nike, and the South African Tourism Board. Duma Collective has also been recognized for its work, winning several awards, including the SAB Social Innovation Award in 2019. The agency represents talents such as Mihlali Ndamase and Jessica nkosi, just to name a few. According to the company website, Duma’s mission is “to be an innovative and agile industry – leading creative communications agency that attracts and retains accountable, passionate and reliable talent to produce era-defining work”.



As we celebrate Women’s Month in South Africa, it is important to recognize the achievements of women like Sibu Mabena. She is an example of how women can break down barriers and succeed in any field they choose, and a reminder that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Her story is an inspiration to us all.
